EXIT is an acclaimed summer music festival held at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia. Featuring over 1000 artists across more than 40 stages and festival zones, it has become a major event in the European music scene.
The festival has been recognised as the "Best Major European Festival" at the EU Festival Awards in 2013 and 2017, an accolade considered one of the most prestigious in the industry. EXIT also received the "Best Overseas Festival" award at the UK Festival Awards in 2007 and was named the "Best Summer Music Festival in Europe" in 2016 by the travel site "European Best Destinations," in collaboration with the European Commission. Additionally, in March 2018, the Regional Cooperation Council honoured EXIT as the Champion of Regional Cooperation for 2017.
In 2021, EXIT became the first major European festival to take place since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting over 180,000 visitors over four days. This edition, marking the festival's 20th anniversary, was heralded as a historic event by international media outlets such as Billboard and Variety.
EXIT was originally established in 2000 at the University Park as a student-led movement advocating for democracy and freedom in Serbia and the Balkans. Following the Yugoslavian general election in 2000, the festival relocated to the Petrovaradin Fortress in 2001, where it has been held ever since.
Over the years, EXIT has garnered international attention and has been featured in numerous major publications, including CNN, The Guardian, The Sun, Euronews, The New York Times, BBC, Forbes, The Times, MTV, Huffington Post, Conde Nast Traveller, Daily Mail, The Independent, and Lonely Planet, among others.
The EXIT team also organises seven other events across five locations in four Southeast European countries, including the Sea Dance Festival in Budva, Montenegro, and the Sea Star Festival in Umag, Croatia. The No Sleep Festival in Belgrade won the "Best New Festival" title at the EU Festival Awards in 2019, while the Sea Dance Festival was awarded the "Best Mid-Sized European Festival" in 2015.
Founded with a spirit of youth rebellion and a mission to promote freedom in Serbia and peace in the Balkans, EXIT's mission statement has always emphasised social change through music. The festival remains committed to social responsibility, focusing on environmental and humanitarian issues, creative industries development, and regional cooperation.
Throughout its 20-year history, EXIT has hosted a wide range of internationally renowned artists, including Pet Shop Boys, Billy Idol, The Cure, The Killers, Guns N’ Roses, Franz Ferdinand, Motörhead, Iggy Pop, David Guetta, Massive Attack, Liam Gallagher, Grace Jones, Fatboy Slim, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, The Prodigy, Migos, Sex Pistols, Kraftwerk, Korn, Moby, Arctic Monkeys, Chemical Brothers, Faith No More, LCD Soundsystem, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Pulp, Jamiroquai, M.I.A., Slayer, Ellie Goulding, Hardwell, Carl Cox, Avicii, Nina Kraviz, DJ Snake, Charlotte de Witte, Paul Kalkbrenner, Amelie Lens, Solomun, Artbat, Maceo Plex, Boris Brejcha, and many others.
