Boomtown Chapter Four, is a one-of-a-kind British music festival that combines immersive storytelling, diverse music, and unparalleled stage production.
Held annually at the Matterley Estate in the South Downs National Park, near Winchester, Hampshire, Boomtown has grown from its humble beginnings in 2009 into a globally renowned event. Since moving to its current location in 2011, it has become a cultural phenomenon, attracting tens of thousands of attendees each year.
A Living, Breathing Story
Boomtown is more than just a music festival—it’s an entire world brought to life. Each year’s event is presented as a new "Chapter" in an ongoing narrative, weaving together intricate themes and storytelling. The festival grounds are divided into city-like districts, each with its own unique design and atmosphere.
Every district features immersive sets, venues, and streets populated by hundreds of live actors portraying characters that interact with attendees. Together, they create a vibrant, interactive experience that extends far beyond traditional festival fare. Building this alternate reality is no small feat, with six weeks dedicated to construction and another month for disassembly.
The Six Pillars of Boomtown
Boomtown’s ethos is built around The Six Pillars, which include environmental sustainability, social equality, and community engagement. These principles guide the festival’s vision, ensuring it’s not just a place for entertainment but also a platform for meaningful change.
A Musical Journey Across Genres
Boomtown’s lineup celebrates an extraordinary variety of music, drawing on influences from across the globe. Its stages host everything from reggae, ska, and afrobeat to jungle, drum and bass, techno, and house. Whether you’re a fan of disco, post-punk, or underground electronic music, Boomtown offers something for every taste.
With 12 main stages, over 50 hidden venues, and thousands of performers, the festival creates an expansive and inclusive musical experience. The latest edition, Chapter 4: Power Of Now, introduces eight city districts, each embodying a vision of a utopian society, where attendees can uncover secrets and engage with evolving narratives.
A Festival That Overcomes Challenges
Founded by Chris Rutherford and Luke Marcus "Lak" Mitchell, Boomtown is operated by Boomtown Festival UK Limited, with 18% ownership by Live Nation UK. In 2019, Winchester City Council approved an increase in capacity to 66,000 attendees, further solidifying its status as a major event.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges, leading to cancellations in 2020 and 2021, including a scaled-down “Boom Village.” Despite these setbacks, Boomtown made a triumphant return in 2022, reclaiming its place as one of the UK’s most innovative festivals.
A Unique Blend of Art, Music, and Community
Boomtown continues to push the boundaries of what a festival can be. Blending immersive storytelling, world-class music, and socially conscious values, it offers attendees an experience unlike any other. For those seeking more than just a weekend of music, Boomtown is a portal into a parallel world of creativity, culture, and connection.
